SI-API vs OpenRouter: API Costs for Coding and Everyday Use

Compare API prices, a 50% cache-hit workload and Agent setup. See where SI-API can cost less for coding and daily use, and where OpenRouter offers more.

By West George

TL;DR

SI-API is an API gateway focused on coding and everyday use: code edits, debugging, chat and automation. OpenRouter covers a much wider range of models. Connecting an Agent is broadly similar on both; the practical choice is which models you use and what your workload costs.

  • For frequent coding tasks and high API usage, SI-API can be the cheaper option, particularly with a well-used Coding Plan.
  • For the widest model selection and more provider-routing choices, OpenRouter has the advantage.
  • Pay-as-you-go prices vary by model and provider. The tables below show both services side by side, including where OpenRouter costs less.

1. Model Choice

SI-API focuses on seven models from DeepSeek, GLM, Kimi, MiniMax and Qwen for coding and daily API work. OpenRouter offers hundreds of models, including Claude, GPT and Gemini. OpenRouter gives you more choice; SI-API keeps a smaller catalog around recurring development and everyday tasks.

2. Billing

Both services offer prepaid, pay-as-you-go API usage. SI-API also offers Coding Plan subscriptions that share an allowance across its models. Start with the token prices, then compare the cost of the same workload.

Token prices, side by side

All rates below are USD per 1M tokens, before tax and credit-purchase fees. OpenRouter prices were checked on October 24, 2026. Each OpenRouter row names one provider route, chosen for the lowest quoted cost of the 50%-cache workload below among available tool-capable routes with cache-read pricing and no separate cache-write charge. These are provider-specific quotes, not a promise of default-routing prices.

What does a 50% cache hit rate actually cost?

Use 1M total input tokens: 0.5M uncached and 0.5M read from cache. Add 1M output tokens. That is 2M tokens in total; the 50% hit rate applies only to input. Blended input price = half the input rate + half the cached-input rate. Total usage cost = blended input price + the output rate.

Qwen3.8 Max *$0.825$1.125$5.825$7.125$7.516875

The last column includes OpenRouter Standard’s 5.5% credit-purchase fee, allocated to the usage shown. It is a funding cost, not an extra per-request charge. Taxes and promotional credits are excluded on both sides. The same provider routes are used in both tables.

MiniMax M3.1 Flash: SI-API costs $0.6275 for this workload, versus $0.605 on the selected OpenRouter route, or $0.638275 including the Standard fee. OpenRouter has the lower inference charge here; SI-API has the lower funded cost. The GLM and DeepSeek routes shown above are cheaper on OpenRouter pay as you go.

Where Coding Plan changes the comparison

For sustained coding and repeated API calls, a shared allowance can cost less than paying for every token. Coding Plan Pro is $29.90 per month on a recurring subscription. For MiniMax M3.1 Flash, its full weekly allowance, normalized to 30 days, gives an allocated cost of $0.2326 for the same 2M-token workload. Compare that with $0.638275 on the selected OpenRouter route including its Standard fee.

That plan figure assumes full weekly utilization and usage spread within the 5-hour limit. The subscription fee stays the same if you use fewer tokens. Choose a plan when your recurring usage can use its allowance; for light or irregular use, compare the pay-as-you-go totals above. SI-API pricing.

3. Agent Setup

Setup is broadly the same: create an API key, set the base URL, choose a model and connect your Agent. Both can be used with coding tools such as Claude Code and Codex. SI-API provides ready-made configurations for its catalog; OpenRouter provides a broader model and provider selection. Setup alone is not a strong reason to choose one over the other.

4. Limits That Affect a Working Session

For everyday API use, the constraints are broadly similar: available credit, the selected model’s context and output limits, tool support and upstream capacity. Neither service makes every model or provider behave identically.

The main billing difference is Coding Plan: SI-API counts usage against both 5-hour and 7-day allowances. Continuing with API credit when a plan cannot cover a request is optional. OpenRouter pay as you go uses credit and spending limits, while free models have additional request caps. For long Agent sessions, check the selected route and your remaining budget on either service.

5. Which Fits Your Work?

Choose SI-API for recurring coding and daily API work. If your routine includes debugging, generating code, running Agents or making a large number of API calls, SI-API can be a cheaper option—especially when a Coding Plan fits your usage. The MiniMax example above shows how a well-used plan changes the cost of the same workload.

Choose OpenRouter for breadth and provider choice. If you need models outside SI-API’s catalog or want to choose among competing inference providers, OpenRouter offers more options. Its low-priced routes also win several of the pay-as-you-go comparisons above.

Price sources and comparison method
